About a decade previously the factotum and servant of the Count, Figaro, helped the Count Almaviva to wrest Rosina, now the Countess Almaviva, from the clutches of her guardian Doctor Bartolo.
Having grown bored with his wife, Almaviva now seeks solace in the arms of any young woman, available or not. Figaro himself is about to be married to Susanna, the servant of the Countess. It becomes clear that the Count has an interest in Susanna’s direction. Equally, Marcellina, a ‘friend’ of Doctor Bartolo has her eye firmly on Figaro who, in a weak moment, has signed a contract with her to the effect that, if he does not pay back some money to Marcellina that he has borrowed, he will marry her. Needless to say he has not paid back the money. Doctor Bartolo, of course, wants to get his revenge on Figaro for the past humiliation.
A teenager, Cherubino, abounding in testosterone, has been caught in a compromising position with the young and pretty Barbarina. The local busybody and singing teacher, Don Basilio, has seen everything that is going on and attempts to oil the motor of scandal. Chaos ensues.
Musica Lirica’s first production was Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi performed in June 2009 with orchestra, soon followed by a Mozart Evening and Act 2 of The Marriage of Figaro performed at Alston Hall to raise funds for the performance of all four acts. It is the intention of Musica Lirica that this first act of Figaro at Lytham Assembly Rooms will be one of our many future educational opera performances.
The entire Marriage of Figaro will be performed early in 2011 followed in June by Puccini’s Sister Angelica. In November 2010 Musica Lirica will perform Mozart’s one act opera Bastien and Bastienne, a rarely performed work written when the composer was twelve. Please telephone 01253 696990 or keep an eye on www.visualnoiseuk.com for further information.
Future plans are to perform Donizetti’s Don Pasquale and the whole of Puccini’s Il Trittico (The Cloak, Sister Angelica and Gianni Schicchi) in an evening spawned of a love child between Bayreuth’s Wagnerfestspiel and Glyndbourne Festival.
